Athletics Ireland Official of the Year : Cyril Smyth

So proud of our very own beloved Cyril J Smyth! Cyril has been a devoted servant of athletics in Ireland for many decades: at club, county, provincial and national level, including his role(s) in DUHAC. We don’t know how he fits it all in, we suspect he never sleeps or has discovered the magical 48 hour day.

Congratulations Cyril, we are so proud of you!

Wicklow Masters XC Champioships

Bray Runners AC hosted the Wicklow Masters Cross Country Championships on a sunny, but chilly morning in Shanganagh Park Sunday 9th January 2022. Thank you to all the club and county stewards that helped make it a great event.

First, to toe, the line were the women and in a very competitive race, Aisling Smith and Suzanne Foot ran strongly to finish 2nd and 3rd overall. Susan Brady ran an excellent race finishing 14th overall and securing W60 gold, followed by Orla Philips who was first across the line in the W65 category. The team was supported by Maureen O'Rourke and Eileen Fox and won silver in the team event.

In the men's race, Conor Maher was 3rd M40 leading the M35-49 team to bronze while Dominic Horan was 2nd M50 also helping the M50+ team to team bronze. Conor and Dominic were ably supported by Paul Allen, Conor Boyle, Paul Donohoe, Kieran O'Leary, Paul O'Dwyer, Gerard Keaty and John Ashworth.
Congratulations to all.

Return to racing

We are seeing a very steady and welcome return to racing these past few weeks. Darren Cullen was a very close second in the Roundwood Lakes 10k. Also in the top 10, in 9th place, was Neil Felton continuing his excellent form. In 14th place, making a very welcome return to racing was Lee Borland in 14th place.

Our good friend Cathy Mitchell finally cracked the 45 barrier in 44:15 at the Blessington Lakes 10k. She was also first F50 home, a well-deserved podium in the midst of marathon training.

Our juvenile and junior section had an excellent weekend representing their schools at the Tailteann Games in Santry. Anna Watson broke 10 mins for the 3000m and finished in second place, earning selection for the Schools International in Derbyshire next month. Eleanor Foot very narrowly missed selection (one place and a couple of seconds!) in the 1500m steeplechase. Our other athletes, Grainne O'Sullivan and Niamh Murray acquitted themselves very well amongst stellar competition.
